ART EXHIBIT: Whimsical Art Trail opens (8/20)

The Strong Museum of Play offers items and displays for adults, too, whether it's the nostalgia factor involved in the cases of toys from yester-decade, or the information essays that come along with so many of the displays. My personal favorite is the ever-changing Whimsical Art Trail, which is geared toward kids in the imaginative artworks and search-for-the-stations aspects, but perhaps appreciated more fully by adults who have to hunt for their playful impulse, buried in stacks of practical tasks. And the super inspirational element is that the items in the trail are created by a revolving array of adult artists.
The newest edition of the Whimsical Art Trail opens Saturday, August 20, with a chance to meet the artists 1-4 p.m. Featured this time around are the imaginative, large-scale balloon sculptures of "airigami" artist Larry Moss, which includes balloon-sculptured interpretations of such classic paintings as the "Mona Lisa," "Whistler's Mother," and "American Gothic." Also featured are Robert Rogalski's otherworldly puppets and fantastical sculptures influenced by "The Hobbit," Jim Henson, and Dr. Seuss; Jennifer Carson, who will display plush fantasy creatures including owls, polliwogs, and elves; and Kelly Cheatle's micro crochet figures (like Yoda standing on a penny!). Cheatle and Moss also collaborated on the "Once Upon a Time" series of balloon sculpture photographs inspired by fairy tales, which are also on display.
The art will remain on display through November 20, and is included in general admission fees: $12 for adults, $11 for seniors, $10 for children ages 2-15, and free to children under 2 and members. Museum of Play hours are Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday-Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m. For more information, call 263-2700, or visit museumofplay.org.

Amazing sculptures of famous paintings made from balloons

You don't want it to be popped art... the amazing copies of 'serious' famous paintings made from balloons.
From the Mona Lisa to Whistler's Mother, all have been recreated in surprisingly accurate balloon form.
The amazing artwork - dubbed 'Airigami' - is the fun creation of artist and former street magician Larry Moss from New York.

His popular designs can make hundreds of thousands of dollars.

His portfolio also includes a massive 10,000 sq ft haunted house made from a staggering 100,000 balloons.

He said: 'I like exploring what other people create and play off of that, balloons are a whimsical medium.
'I wanted to go in a completely different direction and do something incredibly light and playful.
'You can create art with anything, but there are certain materials that people expect to be used for art, like pencils, paints, clay.
'By using balloons, something that people think of as a toy, all preconceived notions of what art is can be thrown out the window.
'I can do whatever I want, and people will look at it differently.'
Just like Grandpa Carl's flying house in the Disney Pixar film 'Up', Larry explains that balloons have given him the opportunity to explore the world.
He said: 'I've exhibited my work around the world, prints of my work are available from me or several museum gift shops and range from $20 for small open edition prints, to several hundred for canvas prints.
'Large sculpture installations can reach into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Larry's works seem to be appreciated by all that stumble across them.

step by step balloon column

The balloon column is possibly the most impressive part of your balloon display ... and the most difficult to build, you might think.

True, it's not a piece of cake, but we'll show you step by step that it's completely do-able, even for a 'newbie'. And the result is certainly worth the effort!

So, let's roll up our sleeves and get started!

Balloon Column - MaterialsWhat you need:

  • 11" high quality latex balloons in two different colors (in our example we used 'Qualatex' pearl white and pearl peach),
  • 5" high quality latex balloons in the same colors,
  • your pre-prepared sturdy base
  • balloon sizer and
  • an electrical inflator.

For a balloon column of 7'3" (2,2 m) height you'll need a stand of 6'2" (1,88 m), 17 11" balloons (9 white, 8 pearl) and 52 5" balloons (26 white, 26 pearl). Make sure you have some extra balloons in case any should burst.
Sidebar:
If this balloon column will be the only air filled balloon decoration you'll ever make, then you might want to rent an inflator instead of buying one. Check out specialized balloon suppliers in your area and ask whether they offer inflators for rent. Alternatively, gather friends and family together to help you blowing up balloons manually ... or rather "mouthually"!

something about arches

arches

Arches create a powerful impact for any occasion. They offer a captivating appeal that draw people in.
Balloon arches can greatly enhance entrances and key areas of any event.
Used at doorways, arches let everyone know where the party is. Walking through a balloon arch gives your guests the feeling of a grand entrance.
Used over head tables, food tables, dance floors and stages, balloon arches bring attention to important areas of any room.
